Paavo Järvi's Sibelius Confirms First Impression

First impressions can be mistaken, but not in the case of conductor Paavo Järvi.  Estonian-born Järvi put himself in a front-runner position to succeed Cincinnati Symphony music director Jesús-López-Cobos on his first guest conducting appearance with the orchestra in February, 1999. Järvi's calling card then was Sibelius' Symphony No. 5. He reaffirms that impression in this new Telarc release, his second with the CSO, which features Sibelius' Symphony No. 2 and Estonian composer Eduard Tubin's Symphony No. 5 (first published in The Cincinnati Post Aug. 27, 2002).

New Järvi CD Features Sibelius' "Maiden in the Tower"

Sibelius' only opera, the one-act "The Maiden in the Tower," gets a sensitive and colorful reading on this Virgin Classics disc by Paavo Järvi with the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra. Ellerhein Girls' Choir, Estonian National Male Choir and soloists including soprano Solveig Kringelborn.  Nordic colors also rule in the incidental music to "Pelleas et Melisande" and "Valse Triste" (first published in The Cincinnati Post April 25, 2002).   - [Read more]
