The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra has a new principal
violist, Christian Colberg.
A native of Puerto Rico, Colberg served most recently as assistant principal violist of the Baltimore Symphony. He is a graduate of the Peabody Institute of Music in Baltimore and will join the CSO in September.
Colberg, who has twice been honored by the government of Puerto Rico for his achievements in classical music, has performed widely with artists such as bassist Gary Karr, pianist Samuel Sanders, violist Milton Katims and conductor Marvin Hamlisch. His New York City debut was described by Strings Magazine as having “real romantic ardor, charm and a good deal of brilliance.” He is also a violinist, composer and conductor.
“Cincinnati is a cosmopolitan city with a world class orchestra,” said Colberg, who led the CSO viola section in concerts in April. “The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra has an incredibly rich musical history and legacy, and to be a part of that is a humbling privilege. I can only hope to add to the orchestra in a manner that represents the high standards of the CSO. In my first concert with the CSO, I was able to experience the warm response and pride from the audience towards their orchestra. In time, I hope to meet many of the audience regular attendees, and maybe bring in a few newcomers. I know that I am certainly looking forward to my new life with the CSO.”
Colberg succeeds Marna Street, who became CSO principal viola emeritus in 2007.
